Syria is ready to repulse any possible Israeli aggression, Information Minister Muhsen Blal confirmed.
He said in a press statement that Israel's readiness and alertness spring from the crisis it is suffering after failure of its latest aggression on Lebanon, noting that his country is taking into consideration the possibility of launching a fresh Israeli military adventure.
Syria, he went on, is preoccupied with realizing just, comprehensive and durable peace in the Middle East, including the return of the occupied Syrian Golan Heights in full, Israel's pull out from the remaining part of South Lebanon, establishing the independent Palestinian state and return of refugees.
On the Syrian US relations, he said they are at the lowest ebb and called for opening a dialogue with the US Administration to depict what are the demands of the Administration.
In his opinion there is no need for mediation between Syria and the US because the US knows very well that Syria is the key for any solution in the region.
In an interview with the Kuwaiti newspaper al-Anba Syrian President Bashar Assad tressed that his country was preparing for an imminent attack from Israel".
"As far was we're concerned, the prospect for peace is unrelated to the changing circumstances and constitutes a basic principle, but at the same time we are preparing for an Israeli attack at any minute".
"We all know that Israel is militarily strong and backed by the U.S." He said Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has consistently "given up on the peace process," YNetNews.com said.
With the United States supporting Israel's policies, he said, his country must prepare for war.
