The Festival will enable Sydney-siders to experience the impressive sound of 200 singers and 350 musicians performing together in a spectacular musical kaleidoscope of colour and brilliance, Premiering Sydney 2006.

The largest band event in the Southern Hemisphere in 2006 features outstanding American musicians filling the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Town Hall. 200 choristers will join 350 musicians in a massed band event that includes over 12 timpanis, 15 tubas, 20 trombones, 40 trumpets, 50 clarinets and a host of other instruments.

The evening Gala Band Concert on Sunday 9 July also showcases the world premiere of Dr David Gillingham's Sails of Time, a captivating new work written especially for the 8th Wonder of the World – the Sydney Opera House and for this event.

Artistic Director Dr Matthew George said "audiences could expect a world-premiere performance in a world-class venue, with work composed specifically for this particular time and space and for the musicians performing it." Dr Gillingham said he was inspired by the Sydney Opera House when he first visited Australia during the early 1970s as a Vietnam War Veteran, during the architectural icon's construction.

"The audience will be taken on a musical journey with Sails of Time leading them through the history of Sydney, Australia," he said. "Holding the story together will be the Sails of Time Theme (original music by Gillingham) and the popular folk song Click go the Shears."

The program's other major Australian premiere will be an unusual, but moving version of Gloria, conducted by Joseph Julian Gonzales from his Misa Azteca. Gonzales is internationally recognized as a highly versatile and award-winning film and television composer with credits ranging from classical to popular music.

Gonzales' Misa Azteca is for symphony orchestra, mixed choir and tenor solo and has been performed at prestigious concert theatres, including Carnegie Hall and has been inspired by traditional Aztec instrumentation, which give the work a unique sound.
