Hugh McFadden, Lebanon poem

Lebanon, July 2006: The Security Council Meets

As the bombs explode and the missiles fly
what’s the number of this Resolution?
Is it 1697, did you say?
That’s a long, long way from 242
(whatever you do, don’t mention The War).

We must have an urgent ceasefire soon,
but not now, not immediately
(now is a moveable feast of slaughter).
But when all the bombs have exploded at
last and when all the missiles have flown,
then we might have an urgent ceasefire:
not now, not immediately … but soon,
soon.

Orwell … you didn’t know the half of it.
