WORDS IN THE TWILIGHT TIME

In the twilight time
Of the evening and the world
And the stillness that signals this
In such a time
In such a time
The heart opens and closes as usual

What songs might be sung for this
Where are the books on such moments
The in-between moments of expectation
Expectation that cannot be named
But must be lived
In the twilight of the evening and the world

Only verse is consolation
Neither the claims of rituals
Not the history of tradition
Can comfort the heart at such moments
Only verse and its intentions
Only verse and its intonations
Only verse and the mouth mouthing it
Can give the heart new hope

And so in this twilight time
In the silence of approaching rain
In the shadows that weave and conspire
I write this out
These words, these words,
In twilight and not a little hope
And bless them with expectation
And hope that they will act for me
In ways that I cannot

In a twilight time
In half-dark and shade
This is what the heart sets itself to achieve
So as to achieve something
