
Eileen Dawson Peterson grew up in South Dakota but has lived in Eugene, OR since 1952. She has written poetry since childhood.

Still the guns
hush the mortars
stop the bombs.
There can be no peace
while war is waged,
people die, are maimed,
languish without hope
soldiers drop in vain
for no good reason
Light a candle against the darkness.
strike a match and let it flair.
light the shadows,
lift a curtain,
open the windows and
fling wide the door.
