Wandering Through Thinsbury Forest, poem by Joel Morgan

Dawn Fawn stepped onto my clog
      “This dare’s between those two
      Pretenders lose Queen Cape’s grace
She will know how to best help you.”

I knew deep down in my core
That Dawn Fawn pegged the truth
But I could see my journey’s end
Queen Cape buzzed the winner’s booth!

With all the excitement of the race
How would she find some time
      To receive this lonesome frog
Whose family he had left behind?

“What am I supposed to do?”
      Said I to the deer
      “They will get her attention
While I cool my heels down here.”

“Lets just go enjoy the race
      The finish should be grand!
We can cheer the winner on
Then give them both a great big hand!”

Dawn Fawn bolted for the Inn
      I hopped close behind
It was really nice to have
An angel lift my guilt crammed mind

All at once, a cheer rose up
As the turtle broke the tape
The lively hare nowhere in sight
To win hurrahs from good Queen Cape

As I got closer, I could see
The crowd rock to and fro
They would sing then dance then chant
Doves soared in an arrow straight row

I once dreamed of this place
So many years ago gone past
If I had my tadpoles here
Our dreams would be fulfilled at last!

I hopped through the finish line
With Dawn Fawn at my side
While Queen Cape draped a medal on
That turtle with the winning stride

All at once, the crowd went numb
      “There he is Queen Cape!
That toad that you lamented for
Has managed to make his own escape!”

Again, a cheer rode on the air
      Was this applause for me?
Dawn Fawn lowered down her head
Lifted me up so I could see

Oh by heavens. Well a day
      What could I have done?
      Then the crowd went silent
And I heard my long lost son

Then I heard my daughter peal
      Next, I heard my bride
How could they all have gotten here
Without me as a star to guide?

“We all thought you lost to gales,”
Said Queen Cape as she smiled
“Your home was lost to profiteers
We brought your kin back to the wild.”

“We had also plucked up you
      But somehow you got lost
For days we scoured all about
For where you were untimely tossed.”

“Take your time and look about
For this is your new home
Take your family in your arms
You now have forever to roam”

I took a knee to thank Queen Cape
      Then leaped into the lake
My clogs got soaked but I cared not
This instant joy I would not forsake

      When we finally settled still
I began to miss my fawn
When I looked about for her
To my dismay realized she’d gone

I never got to thank her
For blessings she gave to me
For the moments she was here
She helped this poor blind frog to see

I could not thank her face-to-face
So instead, I kneeled to pray
And I will thank good God for her
Until taken to heaven to stay.
